Fear Not 220

Beloved children of the Church, as the shadows of evening lengthen and we gather in spirit around the sacred mysteries, let us turn our hearts to the words of the prophet Elisha in the book of Kings. In that hour when the king of Aram had surrounded the city with horses and chariots, the servant of the man of God cried out in terror, 'Alas, my master, what shall we do?' Yet Elisha answered without fear: 'Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.' And opening the eyes of his young companion, he revealed the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire. This scene, drawn from the sacred history of Israel, speaks directly to the trials of the early Church, when persecutions pressed upon the faithful like the armies of old. The holy fathers, in their wisdom preserved in the Catena Aurea, saw here not merely a vision of angelic hosts but a foretaste of the heavenly Jerusalem descending to aid the struggling saints. St. John Chrysostom, in his homilies on the Gospels, reminds us that the same Lord who opened the eyes of the servant opens the eyes of our faith today, showing that the true battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers. In the patristic tradition, this multitude of fiery chariots signifies the innumerable company of angels who encamp around those who fear the Lord, as the Psalmist declares. Origen, in his commentaries, interprets the 'our side' as the triumphant Church already reigning with Christ, joined to the militant Church on earth through the communion of saints. Thus, when we face the fears of our age—whether the arrows of doubt, the siege of worldly powers, or the darkness within our own souls—we stand not alone. The Early Fathers, drawing from this very passage, exhort us to pray as Elisha did: 'Lord, open our eyes.' As the sun sets on this day, let the assurance of Elisha become our evening hymn. The heavenly army outnumbers every foe, for Christ has already overcome the world.
