Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren, as the shadows of evening gather and we turn our hearts once more to the sacred Scriptures, let us ponder the words spoken to Joshua in the hour of trial: "Do not fear them..." (Joshua 11:6). In the days when Israel stood upon the threshold of the Promised Land, the northern kings had gathered like a mighty flood—Hazor, Madon, Shimron, and Achshaph—uniting their chariots and horsemen to overwhelm the chosen people. Yet the Lord spoke not of strategy or numbers, but of trust in His sovereign arm. Historical memory recalls how Joshua, that faithful servant, had already tasted victory at Jericho and Ai; now, facing a coalition far greater, he receives the divine assurance that these foes would be delivered as slain before Israel by the next day's light. The Early Church Fathers, those luminous voices of the first centuries, saw in this command a mirror for the soul's warfare. St. John Chrysostom, in his homilies on the trials of the faithful, reminds us that fear is the enemy’s first weapon, but the Lord disarms it by promising His presence. Origen, interpreting the conquest spiritually in his commentaries, teaches that the Canaanite kings represent the passions and demonic powers arrayed against the baptized soul. To "do not fear them" is to advance in the strength of Christ, whose cross has already routed the principalities. Drawing from the spirit preserved in the Catena Aurea’s patristic chains, we hear echoes of St. Augustine: the heart that clings to God’s fidelity finds the multitude of visible enemies reduced to dust, for tomorrow’s deliverance is already accomplished in the eternal now of divine promise. In our own evening vigil, dear children of the Church, these ancient battles speak to the anxieties that rise like northern coalitions against our peace—doubts, persecutions, the clamor of a world arrayed against holiness. Yet the same Lord who spoke to Joshua speaks to us: fear not, for He who conquered death will deliver us. Let us therefore stand firm, as Joshua did, with the sword of the Spirit and the shield of faith, trusting that the victory belongs not to the strong but to those who believe.
