Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren, as the shadows lengthen this evening and we gather in the quiet of the Lord’s house, let us ponder the words spoken by Christ to Simon Peter upon the shores of Gennesaret: 'Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men' (Luke 5:10). In that sacred moment, after a night of fruitless toil, the disciples had witnessed the miraculous draught of fishes. Their nets, once empty, overflowed at the Master’s command. Peter, overwhelmed, fell at Jesus’ knees and cried, 'Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.' Yet our Savior did not depart; instead, He transformed fear into mission. The Early Church Fathers saw here the profound mystery of the Incarnation calling ordinary men to extraordinary grace. St. Ambrose, in his Exposition on the Gospel of Luke, teaches that the sea represents the world, the boat the Church, and the nets the preaching of the Gospel. What had been a labor for mere fish now becomes the harvest of souls. St. John Chrysostom reminds us in his homilies that Peter’s confession of sinfulness prepared him for apostleship, for only the humble are fit to draw others from the depths of sin. Drawing from the rich catena of patristic wisdom compiled in the Catena Aurea, we hear Bede the Venerable note that the great catch prefigures the conversion of nations: the two boats signify the circumcised and uncircumcised, both filled by the one word of Christ. Cyril of Alexandria adds that the command 'Launch out into the deep' bids us to venture beyond the shallows of fear into the profound waters of faith. Thus the Lord reorients Peter from catching fish to catching men—souls destined for eternal life. In our own age, when the nets of the world seem torn and empty, these words resound anew. Do not be afraid. The same Lord who filled the nets now fills His Church. Let us, like Peter, leave all and follow, casting the net of the Gospel with courage.
