Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren, gathered here in the quiet of the evening hour, let us turn our hearts once more to the words of our Lord from the Gospel of Saint Luke: 'Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.' These words fall upon us like dew upon parched ground, spoken by Christ amid the pressing crowds who sought Him in Galilee. In that twelfth chapter, the Master prepares His disciples for the trials ahead, warning them of the leaven of the Pharisees and the fear that grips the soul when men threaten the body but cannot touch the immortal spirit. The sparrow, sold for two farthings in the markets of old Jerusalem, becomes the humble measure of divine care, for not one falls without the Father's knowledge. The holy fathers of the Church, those pillars who illuminated the faith in its earliest days, have unfolded this mystery with great depth. Saint John Chrysostom, in his homilies on Matthew, reminds us that if God extends His providence even to these least creatures, how much more does He number the hairs upon our heads, guarding the souls redeemed by the Blood of His Son. Saint Augustine, reflecting in his sermons on divine providence, teaches that fear of man is a chain forged in the darkness, but the knowledge of our worth in God's eyes breaks every fetter. The Catena Aurea gathers these voices, showing how the Lord contrasts the fleeting life of the sparrow with the eternal vigilance of the Creator, who called all things into being from nothingness. In the age of the early martyrs, when the faithful faced the lions and the sword, these words rang with particular power. The Church, still young and persecuted, clung to this promise: our value is not measured by earthly esteem but by the infinite love that sent the Only Begotten into the world. As the fathers exhort, let us cast aside the fear that shrinks the heart and embrace instead the courage born of trust. For if the hairs of our head are counted, surely the trials we bear today are known to Him who holds all eternity in His hand. My children, as the sun sets and shadows lengthen, rest in this assurance. The same Lord who spoke to the apostles speaks to us now across the centuries.
