Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren in the Lord, as the shadows of evening gather around us in this sacred hour, let us ponder deeply the words of the royal prophet in the twenty-seventh Psalm: The Lord is my light and my salvation; of whom am I afraid? These verses arise from the trials of David, who fled the jealous rage of King Saul and later the rebellion of his own son Absalom, yet found refuge not in human strength but in the divine presence that banishes all dread. In the historical setting of ancient Israel, the psalm reflects a time of political upheaval and personal betrayal, where enemies surrounded the anointed one on every side. The Early Church Fathers, drawing from this, saw in it a prefiguring of the persecutions faced by the apostles and martyrs. St. Augustine, in his profound Enarrationes, teaches that this light is none other than Christ, the eternal Word who enlightens every soul and scatters the terrors of the night. Fear, he explains, stems from turning away from this light toward the fleeting shadows of the world. The Catena Aurea compiles the wisdom of many holy doctors on this verse, linking it to our Savior's command in the Gospels not to fear those who can destroy only the body. St. John Chrysostom, preaching amid the dangers of his own era, exhorts the faithful to stand unwavering, for the Lord is our salvation and no earthly power can prevail against those who walk in His illumination. The persecutions of the early centuries tested this truth, as believers faced lions and flames yet confessed with David that they had no cause for fear. Let us therefore, in this evening reflection, cast aside the anxieties that assail our hearts. The Lord who sustained David and strengthened the Fathers continues to guard His Church. Through prayer and the sacraments, we abide in His light, secure against all foes visible or invisible.
