Verse #125 of 220

Beloved brethren, gathered here in the quiet hours as evening falls, let us ponder the sacred words of our Savior from the Gospel according to Saint Luke: "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do." Spoken amid the rising threats against the infant Church, these words carry the weight of divine assurance to those who would soon taste the bitterness of martyrdom. In the days when the Lord walked among us, He prepared His disciples for the persecutions that would follow His ascension. The historical context reveals a world where Roman authority and Jewish leaders alike would wield the sword against the followers of the Way. Yet Christ directs our gaze beyond the fleeting power of flesh and blood, reminding us that the soul, immortal and destined for eternity, lies secure in the Father's hands. Hear the voice of the Fathers, preserved in the golden chain of the Catena Aurea. Saint Cyril of Alexandria expounds that the body may suffer for a moment, but the soul, fashioned in God's image, cannot be touched by earthly tyrants. Saint John Chrysostom, preaching in the great city of Antioch, exhorts the faithful to despise the threats of persecutors, for they hold power only over what is perishable. And Saint Augustine, in his profound meditations, teaches that true fear belongs to God alone, who can cast both body and soul into Gehenna. Consider the witness of those early martyrs—Ignatius of Antioch, who embraced the lions as a path to Christ, or Polycarp, who declared himself a Christian before the flames. Their courage flowed not from human strength but from this very teaching: the body is but a temporary dwelling, while the soul abides forever with the Lord. My children, let these words sink deep into your hearts this night. In our own trials, whether of body or spirit, may we cast aside fear of men and cling to the eternal hope. For He who numbers the hairs of our head watches over us. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #125of220 #Catholic
