Verse #202 of 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, gathered here in the sacred assembly of the faithful, let us hearken to the words of the prophet David in the ninety-eighth psalm: 'Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song...' As the great Doctor of Hippo, Augustine of Hippo, expounds in his Enarrationes in Psalmos, this command is no mere invitation to earthly revelry but a divine summons to the new song of redemption, foretelling the Incarnation wherein the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. In the historical context of ancient Israel, this psalm was sung in the Temple during feasts of renewal, recalling the deliverance from Egypt and pointing prophetically to the greater Exodus wrought by our Lord upon the Cross. St. Ambrose, in his commentary on the Psalms drawn richly into the Catena, reminds us that the 'joyful noise' echoes the angelic choirs at Bethlehem, where the earth itself broke forth in song at the Savior's birth. The Early Fathers, from Chrysostom to Gregory the Great, teach that all creation is called to participate in this canticle, for the Lord has revealed His salvation to the nations, making His righteousness known before the eyes of all peoples. In the catacombs and basilicas of the persecuted Church, the faithful intoned these verses with voices raised against the silence of pagan despair, transforming suffering into triumph as the martyrs sang with Stephen. Let us, therefore, in this unplugged meditation, cast aside the vanities of the world and lift our hearts in the ancient liturgy, for the new song is Christ Himself, the eternal melody of the Father. Through His Resurrection, the whole earth—Jews and Gentiles alike—joins the chorus of praise, breaking forth not in transient merriment but in the enduring joy of the Spirit. As the Catena Aurea gathers witnesses like Bede and Theophylact, so we affirm that this joy anticipates the heavenly Jerusalem where song never ceases. Brethren, make the noise of faith, not with instruments of silver but with the harp of the soul tuned to virtue. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #202of220 #Catholic
