Verse #083 of 220
Beloved brethren in the Lord, gathered in the sacred assembly of the faithful, let us hearken this day to the voice of the prophet Jeremiah, who declares in the twenty-third chapter, verse four: '...they need no longer fear...' In the days of old, when Judah languished under the shadow of Babylonian exile, the Lord God beheld the faithless shepherds—those kings and priests who scattered the flock, devouring the sheep rather than tending them. Jeremiah, that weeping prophet, foresaw the desolation wrought by false leaders, yet he proclaimed the divine promise of restoration: the raising up of faithful shepherds who would guard the people of Israel, so that none should fear, nor be dismayed, nor go missing from the fold. This oracle, rooted in the covenant history from Moses to David, echoes the Exodus deliverance and anticipates the messianic age. As the Early Church Fathers expounded, drawing from the Septuagint and the apostolic tradition preserved in the Catena Aurea, this prophecy finds its fulfillment in Christ our Lord, the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. St. Augustine, in his homilies on the Psalms, teaches that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, yet in Christ all terror of judgment yields to the peace of the redeemed. St. John Chrysostom, preaching amid the perils of Constantinople, reminds us that the bishops and presbyters of the Church stand as these new shepherds, appointed by apostolic succession to feed the flock with the word of truth and the sacraments. From the Catena Aurea on the Gospels, we learn how the Fathers like St. Gregory the Great interpreted such prophecies as calls to vigilant pastorship, lest wolves in sheep's clothing invade the fold. In the historical context of the early centuries, when persecutions raged under emperors like Diocletian, the faithful clung to this assurance: through the incarnate Word, the scattered children of God are gathered, no longer fearing the lion's roar or the tyrant's sword. Let us, then, cast aside all dread, for the Lord Himself shepherds us through His vicars on earth, guiding us to green pastures and still waters. May this word strengthen your souls unto eternal life. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #083of220 #Catholic
